The International Agency for Research on Cancer (“IARC”), a specialized agency of the World Health Organization (“WHO”), maintains the IARC Publications website and various other websites (hereinafter collectively called the “Site”) in which information, data, publications, documents, and materials (hereinafter collectively called "Materials", individually called “Material”) are made available for general distribution. IARC is pleased to allow users ("Users") to visit the Site and to use Materials from the Site in accordance with the Terms of Use and Conditions specified below. Use of the Site constitutes agreement with the following:
1. Intellectual Property Rights
Materials made available by IARC/WHO enjoy copyright protection under the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literature and Artistic Works, under other international conventions, and under national laws on copyright and neighbouring rights. IARC exercises copyright over its Materials to make sure that they are used in accordance with the Agency's principles. All rights are reserved.
Extracts from IARC’s Materials and Site may be reviewed, reproduced, or translated for research, private study, educational or non-commercial purposes with limited circulation The only requirement is that the IARC source be appropriately acknowledged.
Reproduction or translation of substantial portions of Materials, reproduction or translation for wider circulation, or any use other than for research, private study, educational or non-commercial purposes require explicit, written permission to be obtained from IARC. Permissions enquiries should be addressed to IARC Publications.
Not all Materials presented on the Site are copyrighted by IARC.
Exceptions are as follows:
A.) The copyright of journal articles cited in the Journal Articles section of the IARC Publications website generally belong to the respective journal publishers. Please check the copyright page associated with the journal article for specific terms and conditions.
B.) Third-Party Materials contained within IARC Materials, which are credited by IARC to a source other than IARC (see Section 2).
2. Use of Third-Party Materials contained within IARC Materials
Some material found on the Site or within IARC Materials may be created by, or incorporate the content of, third parties. IARC is not responsible for any materials that are credited to third parties. IARC therefore does not warrant that the use of any third-party-owned individual component or part contained within IARC Materials will not infringe on the rights of those third parties. The risk of claims resulting from such infringement rests solely with the User. The User is responsible for verifying whether such material, or parts thereof, does belong to third parties and, if so, securing the appropriate permissions from these third parties before using such material.
If any part or individual component attributed to another source/third-party copyright owner appears in an IARC publication, permission may still be required from that source/third-party copyright owner to re-use the individual component or part of the Material. Such individual components or parts may include (but should not be limited to) tables, figures, or images. It is the User’s responsibility to determine whether permission is needed and to obtain permission from the third-party copyright owner.
3. Attribution
Any use of Materials from the Site should be accompanied by an acknowledgment of IARC as the source, citing the uniform resource locator (URL) of the Material.

The format above reflects generic and minimum attribution requirements. For academic citation purposes, more complete attribution can be given in compliance with standard academic practices.
4. Translations of IARC Materials
Any translation of an extract must include the following statement:
“Translated with permission of the publisher from Publication title, Volume/edition number, Author(s), Title of article/title of chapter, Pages No., Year.”
Translation of substantial portions of Materials, translations for wider circulation, or for any use other than for research, private study, educational or other non-commercial purposes require explicit, written permission to be obtained from IARC. Permissions enquiries should be addressed to IARC Publications.
5. No Endorsement
The User may not publicly represent or imply that IARC is participating in, or has sponsored, approved or endorsed the manner or purpose of the User’s use or reproduction of Materials from the Site. IARC retains all rights to censor by all means available, any use of its Materials in a manner that falsifies, misrepresents, disparages, or fraudulently uses the Materials, or disparages or harms the reputation of IARC.
6. No Association, No Use of IARC or WHO Logos and Names
The User may not use any trademark, official mark, official emblem, or logo of IARC or of WHO, or any of its other means of promotion or publicity, without IARC’s, or WHO's as appropriate, prior written consent or in any event to represent or imply an association or affiliation with IARC or WHO.
7. Disclaimers
A. IARC is a specialized agency of WHO. Unless expressly stated otherwise, the findings, interpretations, and conclusions expressed in the Materials in the Site are those of the various authors of the Materials and are not necessarily those of IARC/WHO.
B. Materials provided in the Site are provided "as is" and “as available” without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied, including without limitation warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Specifically, IARC makes no warranty that the Site will meet a User’s individual needs, or that service will be timely, uninterrupted, secure, virus-free or error-free. IARC specifically does not make any warranties or representations as to the accuracy or completeness of any such Materials.
IARC periodically adds, changes, improves, or updates the Materials in the Site without notice. Under no circumstances shall IARC be liable for any loss, damage, liability, or expense incurred or suffered which is claimed to have resulted from use of the Site, including without limitation, any fault, error, omission, interruption, or delay with respect thereto. Use of the Site is at the User's sole risk. Under no circumstances, including, but not limited to, negligence, shall IARC or its affiliates be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, even if IARC has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
C. The User specifically acknowledges and agrees that IARC is not liable for any conduct of any User.
D. The Site may contain advice, opinions, and statements of various information providers and content providers. IARC does not represent or endorse the accuracy or reliability of any advice, opinion, statement, or other information provided by any information provider or content provider, or any User of the Site or other person or entity. Reliance upon any such opinion, advice, statement, or other information shall also be at the User’s own risk. Neither IARC nor its affiliates, nor any of their respective agents, employees, information providers, or content providers shall be liable to any User or anyone else for any inaccuracy, error, omission, interruption, timeliness, completeness, deletion, defect, failure of performance, computer virus, communication line failure, alteration of, or use of any content herein, regardless of cause, for any damages resulting thereof.
E. The designations employed and the presentation of Materials in the Site do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of IARC concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries. Dotted lines on maps represent approximate border lines for which there may not be full agreement.
F. The mention of specific companies or of certain manufacturers' products does not imply that they are endorsed or recommended by IARC in preference to others of a similar nature that are not mentioned. Errors and omissions excepted, the names of proprietary products are distinguished by initial capital letters.
8. Indemnification
As a condition of use of the Site, the User agrees to indemnify and hold IARC and its affiliates harmless, from and against the full amount of any and all actions, claims, losses, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of the User's use of the Site, including without limitation any claims alleging facts that if true would constitute a breach by the User of these terms and conditions. If the User is dissatisfied with any material in the Site or with any of terms and conditions of use of the Site, the User's sole and exclusive remedy is to discontinue using the Site.
9. Links to Third-Party Websites
Links on the Site may connect Users to external or third-party websites that are not related to IARC or under its control. IARC is not responsible for the content of external or third-party websites that may be accessible or displayed through external links on the Site. The presence of these external links does not represent IARC’s endorsement of the views or content of these third-party websites. Navigating to external websites through links on the Site is done at the sole risk of the User, and IARC expressly disclaims any liability for any content that appears on any external site.
10. Arbitration
Any dispute relating to the interpretation or application of this Agreement shall, unless amicably settled, be subject to conciliation. In the event of failure of the latter, the dispute shall be settled by arbitration. The arbitration shall be conducted in accordance with the modalities to be agreed upon by the parties or, in the absence of agreement, with the rules of arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. The parties shall accept the arbitral award as final.
11. Privileges and Immunities
Nothing in or relating to this Agreement shall imply the obligation of IARC or WHO to submit to any national legislation or jurisdiction, or be deemed a waiver of any of the privileges and immunities of IARC or WHO in conformity with the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the Specialized Agencies approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 21 November 1947, or otherwise under any national or international law, convention, or agreement.
12. General
A. IARC reserves its exclusive right in its sole discretion to alter, limit, or discontinue the Site or any Materials in any respect. IARC may amend these Terms of Use and Conditions at any time, and such amendments will be effective immediately upon notice being provided to the User. Notice may be provided on the Site itself, and after posting of the notice, the User’s continued use of the Site will be deemed as acceptance of the modified Terms of Use.
B. No waiver by IARC of any provision of these Terms of Use and Conditions shall be binding except as set forth in a writing signed by its duly authorized representative.
C. Nothing in the Site or any Materials shall be construed, implicitly or explicitly, as containing any medical advice. The Materials contained in the Site are neither intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, nor for use as the basis or medical decision-making.
